How being a Workaholic could Damage your Health
It can be easy to confuse someone who works hard for someone who is a workaholic, but there is an important distinction between the two. Just because someone works long hours and puts a great deal of effort into the work they do, it doesn’t necessarily make them a workaholic. Workaholics are preoccupied with work to the extent that it interferes with the rest of their life. They are so focused on working that they neglect their health and their family and it can be a very lonely existence. It isn’t healthy state of affairs to be considered a workaholic and if your whole life seems to revolve around work, it might be worth seeking help.
In the long term, being a workaholic could definitely damage your health, because you spend all your time either at work or at home doing work and so you never completely switch off. You can find yourself permanently stressed, relying on coffee and pills to keep you awake when really you’d be better off getting some sleep. However, trying to slow down can induce feelings of guilt and anxiety, so that you end up doing more and more until one day something finally snaps.
Being a workaholic is bad for both your mental and physical health. It can get rather lonely, since you usually alienate your colleagues with your obsessive tendencies, while being a workaholic also interferes with your personal life. If you spend every minute of the day working you don’t have time for anyone else and so nobody is going to want to be around you. You can end up feeling lonely and depressed, but still unable to change. If you don’t start to take care of yourself you could find yourself suffering a nervous breakdown somewhere along the line. This isn’t made any easier when you don’t have anyone there to support you.
When you’re a workaholic you tend not to look after your health, anyway, as you don’t get enough sleep; you probably eat a poor diet and don’t bother with exercise. On top of all this, if you’re always stressed your body is always going to be in a state of alert and never fully rested. If this is the case, then your risk of having a heart attack increases significantly, as does your chance of developing other health problems such as cancer.
Therefore, you should erase any notion in your mind that being a workaholic could be a positive thing, as it isn’t, and could, in fact, lead to serious health problems.
