How being Overworked can Damage your Health

If you seem to spend all your time at work then there is a good chance you won’t be taking very good care of your health. Working long, irregular hours leads to stress, frustration and anxiety, which are not exactly going to benefit your overall well-being. The trouble is that you don’t always realise you’re being overworked, even though it should be obvious. If you’ve spent a significant proportion of your life working this way you probably don’t even stop to question whether you’re working too hard or not. However, any kind of deterioration in your health can force you to.

Clearly, if you’re always tense and uptight about work, so that even in your spare time you’re constantly fidgeting and busying yourself, you may be overworked. If you are unable to enjoy the time you’ve been given off this is hardly a sign that you have a healthy work-life balance. When you put your work before everything else it is evident that you need to re-evaluate your priorities, especially if your workaholism is causing you to fall ill. Inevitably, if you’re permanently stressed you’re bound to encounter certain health problems because the mind and the body can only tolerate so much pressure.

If you’re overworked you might find yourself suffering a nervous breakdown, so that you are unable to even get out of bed. Every day becomes a real struggle and your depressed state ends up affecting all those around you. At the time you need friends and relatives most is precisely the time when you try to push them away, believing that you are not worth bothering about. All you see is a bleak future and you may develop suicidal thoughts. Work may still be on your mind, but you just don’t have the motivation to do anything and every aspect of your life suffers because you have been pushed to the limit.

Physically, being overworked can be damaging as well, since you tend to skip meals and eat a poor diet, while rarely exercising and not getting enough sleep. You find that you’re tired and lethargic all the time and that it’s hard to control your weight, while in the longer term high levels of stress could be bad for your heart. Thus, while being overworked may not sound that serious, it can definitely lead to some very significant health problems. If you find that work is dominating your life to such an extent, it is worth addressing the issue before your health starts to suffer.
