Hoto Stay Positive when Unemployed

From 3arf

During these tough economic times we are constantly bombarded by negative economic news.  Every day we hear reports of more layoffs and job losses.  If you are an unemployed victim of this economy it can be hard to keep your spirits up.  This is especially true when you have been searching for work for an extended amount of time. You can however take some steps to help maintain a positive outlook during your job search.

It is important to stay active.  Get out and meet some people.  Become involved in the community.  While you are unemployed you may have the opportunity to participate in activities that you never had time for before.  Take advantage of local volunteer opportunities.  Try volunteering at the local food bank.  It’s a great way to meet people and let them know you’re looking for work.  Often your fellow volunteers will have some advice on who needs help.  If nothing else you can usually find some side jobs to help you get through the hard times. Making a valuable contribution to your community will help you maintain a more positive outlook.

Get some exercise.  It is important to stay physically active during long periods of unemployment.  Try taking daily walks or hikes.  This will go a long way in improving your mental outlook.  Find a friend to hike with to help take your mind off things. Even brief periods of exercise will help you to maintain a positive mental focus.

Take a news break.  Quit listening to the news for a week or two.  It’s amazing how much negativity comes to us through the news and talk radio. Give yourself a short break and you will notice that you are feeling more positive. Try to focus on the positive aspects of the economy. When searching for work remember that the majority of people are still working.  There is a place for you out there.

Be persistent and consistent in your search for work.  Make a job out of your job search.  Set aside regular hours to dedicate to your job search. This will increase your efficiency at searching for employment. By dedicating time to consistently look for work you will feel better because you know that you are doing all you can to help yourself out. It will also help you to focus your job search.  Use this time to do follow ups on the positions you have applied for.

If you stay active you can avoid many of the negative feelings associated with being unemployed.
