Honesty in Resume Writing

From 3arf

Honesty is often the last and not the first consideration in resume writing for many candidates. They are so eager to land a job that they are willing to lie and deceive prospective employers. This article discusses the reasons as to why honesty as the first consideration in resume writing should be your first option.

There are a number of reasons that honesty may not be the first consideration when it comes to resume writing for most candidates. Candidates are dishonest on their resumes because:

  • They are scared that their work history, education or skills set do not match the requirements that the employer has set.
  • They are scared that other candidates are more experienced than they are so they need to lie to be thought of as worthy.
  • Candidates were fired from a previous job that they do not want a prospective employer to know about.

Whatever the reason is for lying the consequences of their actions can force many of these candidates to reconsider their decision to lie on their resume. Here are a few reasons why honest should be the first consideration in resume writing:

They create a bad impression:

The chances that you are not going to get found out are very slim. Being found out for lying on your resume will naturally create a bad impression in the eyes of a prospective employer as they assess whether or not your are suitable for a role in their business.

Checking:

The vast majority of employers will perform a background check on candidates. This way they can confirm the information that you have provided is accurate. Adding incorrect details about your work history or education on purpose will be found out very quickly so do you want to risk it?

Get fired:

Even if initially you are not found out for any dishonest information in your resume the chances are that one day in future you might get caught out. Even if you have committed to the job you might lose the respect of your seniors who might not be able to let your 'little' lie pass.

Career:

Employers have full right to terminate you once they have discovered that you have lied to them in your resume. This could have disastrous results for your career. Future employers who become aware that you have lied might not want to trust you enough to employ you even if you are the perfect candidate.

Hopefully, the reasons above have convinced you enough to believe that honesty as the first consideration in resume writing is the best option. Even if you do not get the job, you still have your integrity and clean conscious. You can then apply for jobs that are most suited to your skills and competency.
