Guide to Extreme off Road
Extreme off roading is a fun activity that need not be too expensive. However, there are certain aspects that need to be considered. During such considerations, safety of driver and passengers needs to be considered at all times.
The sport, or activity of extreme off roading can be carried out in many vehicles, some of which are 2x4, 4x4 drive axle vehicles and more if one considers commercial vehicles with off road capability. And let's not forget 2 wheel vehicles either, as lots of fun can be had off roading on a motorcycle.
A good start to off roading is to find a school that will teach you the basics of off road driving techniques. Often they provide their own vehicles, which means you can enter at a low cost level, as your vehicle purchase can follow after tuition. To find such a school, either search on line, purchase specific publications for off roading such as Total Off Road or 4x4 magazine. They have ads for off road driving schools in their classified section. You could also try your Yellow Pages.
Another way to start is to find an off road club, using again the search critera as above. Such clubs welcome new members and within their ranks, have many experienced off road drivers who are happy to teach what they know to those new to the sport. Such clubs often run their own events too, which means you can add a social element to your hobby. Some of these clubs are vehicle manufacturer specific, and some are for all marques of vehicle,www.fourwheeldriveclub.comsuch an example. However, in the club senario, it will probably be the case that you have to already own a suitable vehicle.
A caution here. Off roading can be dangerous. The best advice is to never go out alone. Always go with two vehicles, so if one gets stuck or breaks down, there is someone there to help. If you are using tracks or greenlanes, let someone know where you are going. Of course if you are using a pay and play site, then there will be marshals present for assistance and your safety.
Know the limitations and abilities of your vehicle and keep within them and also know your own limitations, keep within your driving skills. Make sure your vehicle is well maintained and safe. Act responsibly.
If you are driving a course unknown to you, either on a greenlane or a pay and play site, walk the route first, that way the route gives you the challenges without the dangers. This is particularly true of any standing water, dip the depth so that you do not get in too deep and get stuck or damage your engine due to the influx of water.
Above all else, have fun, but make sure your fun doesn't impact upon anyone else.
