Great Summer Jobs for Teenagers
The best jobs for teenagers during summer vacation may be slim in 2012. Only 3 in 10 teenagers will have summer jobs this year according to theUS Bureau of Labor Statistics. Teenagers are being crowded out of the job market by older workers and immigrants.
Typical summer employment for teenagers has traditionally included working in fast food or restaurants, as a cashier, in child care, retail, lawn maintenance, as a life guard, as camp counselors, and resort jobs at amusement parks, and vacation resorts.
However, here are some great summer jobs for teenagers that are off the proverbial beaten track.
Home Health Aide– This job could be considered as geriatric babysitting. The largest generation of all time, are the aging “Baby Boomers”. Duties would include helping the elderly with personal hygiene and getting dressed. Preparing simple meals and help with feeding, if necessary, would be another task. Dispensing proper medications at proper times is an important job duty. If the teenager has a valid driver’s license and access to a safe car, they can take their client to medical appointments. Other duties might include reading aloud for those with impaired eyesight, and helping write letters. Helping set up computers and cell phones for elderly. Teenagers do not have to be computer gurus for this job. Teaching simple computer skills, programming phone numbers in a cell phone and teaching the basic functions of a cell phone are all great skills to teach the elderly. Summer Internshipsfor high school students. This is a rewarding way to spend summer vacations. There are numerous summer internship programs with various companies and corporations, hospitals and small businesses. Students are paid, but more importantly, this gives students an opportunity to find out if they are interested in making this a career before entering college.
Summer jobs overseas. Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland are offering jobs as Children’s’ Beach Club Assistants. Sports instructor positions are being offered in France. Teenage Summer School Counselors are needed in Scotland. Resort drivers are needed in Portugal. There are many more summer job opportunities available for teenagers all over the world. Many local city and state governments offer summer jobs specifically geared towards teenagers, such ascorn de-tassling. Concert/Event Venuesummer jobs. Teenagers are hired for ticket sales/stubs, concession stands, cleaning up, and parking. Teens can also get involved with the coordinating side of events. This job can teach teamwork and leadership skills while being paid.
While finding summer employment for teenagers may be challenging in today’s economy, there are opportunities available for those teenagers willing to do some research, who can be flexible, and have some basic people skills.
