Graphic Design

Have you ever read a magazine ad, or billboard sign, or any other kind of advertisement, and thought, "that's an interesting way to look at it," or "now that you put it that way, I would like to buy that"? Well that is what a graphic designer's job is to do.

Graphic design uses text and pictures seen in everyday things to convey a certain message to the readers. That message depends on the audience it is aimed at, if it a children's magazine, then they will arrange these elements in a certain way. But if they are advertising a new supercar just put on the market, they would market towards a generally older audience.

For someone to be able to work in the field of graphic design, they have to have an artistic eye and be creative. They use layout elements like text, pictures, overall look, colors, and more to get the viewers to think a certain way. The designer must decide on the font to use, and not just that, but the size of this font and where it should go. Where the headline should go, and where story, or side bar should go. The designer must decide how many pictures to use, what pictures, and where to place all the pictures. A good eyeline makes the page or ad easier to read. A bigger picture will draw an onlooker's attention very quickly as opposed to a small one. A clear font makes reading any ad much easier, whereas a small, compact font makes it very hard to read and will drive potential customers away.

Graphic designers need to perceive what the audience will be looking for. Many companies hire graphic designers to make ads, websites, magazine covers, and more for their company. A certain kind of design will get more customers or buyers than another, and a graphic designer must choose the best one, their job depends on it. Being a graphic designer is not always easy, your company will give you strict deadlines to be met, and if they are not met, then you will be out of a job. Designers have ad after ad to do, whether be a brochure, magazine, CD cover, anything, they are constantly working. Not just sitting around all day lazing around a computer, they must work very hard to complete their deadlines. "The biggest misconception is that good design is just a simple matter of making things pretty'" This is so true, many people do not understand the work it takes to make a really good ad, or layout. No matter what it is, it takes lots of work to get it right.

Graphic designers require state of the arc technology. Many of them use the newest Adobe software out there, and usually operate on Macs. One does not simply sit down and begin using this software. They take years to learn, and when a new one comes out, many times it is a whole new experience they must learn. The best way for a graphic designer to become better is to sit down and just mess around with hundreds of pictures and experimenting with all the different things that the program can do.

So in short, graphic design is a very exhilarating and satisfying job. When it is done right, the effects of the work are reassuring and more than enough incentive to continue doing a great job.
