Identifying General Motors Body Style Codes
General Motors started keeping Body Style Codes for their Vehicles in 1946. The codes were Alphabetic Things were simple in the beginning. Only four letters were needed.
GM created many new and different Body Styles, due to this, the codes grew and changed over time, making it difficult to identify Gm Body Styles. From the years 1946 – 1960, the styles were broken down to A, B, C, and D.
From 1961 – 1965, the codes increased to 7 Styles in this period and were the following letters, A, B, C, D, E, X, and Y. Now a Buick Special was an “A Body”, not a “B" Body as in 1946 – 1960.
From 1966 – 1970 there were still 7 codes but the letters had changed, they were as follows; A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and X. In 1971 – 1975 the letters H and K were added. “K” was the Cadillac Seville.
1976 – 1980 Along came the Chevy Chevette and the letter “ T”. . From 1981 – 1985 the letters J, K, N, R, S, and T, were added.
