Freelance Writing Advice and Encouragement
When it comes to freelance writing the best advice and encouragement you'll get will generally come from other writers. Experienced writers are often quick to offer friendly advice. They may also offer leads, critiques, and a good dose of encouragement, which is something every struggling freelance writer needs.
These tips will provide both advice and encouragement for the person starting out in freelance writing:
Frame that Rejection Slip
If you're not getting rejections, you aren't submitting enough work. You should have a healthy collection of rejection slips (or emails) if you're serious about being a writer. Wear rejection like a badge instead of taking it personally. Remember, it's not you that is being rejected, it's your work, and it may be for a variety of reasons from timing to venue.
Re-evaluate Rejected Work
When your writing is rejected, re-evaluate your efforts with an open mind. Could it have been better? Would it simply be a better fit for a different publication? If no concrete reason was given, think about the possible causes of rejection so you'll know what to do next. You may need to edit or completely re-write the piece. It may be as simple as sending it to another publication.
Got Clips?
It's a hard, cold fact that it's easier to get published if you've already been published. Many would be writers are quick to give away their work just to get a byline. Too many writers are willing to work for "exposure." Think about that. How much exposure will you really get from a publication that isn't even big enough to support its writers? If it's a "non-paying job" (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) it's not worth your time. Find an outlet that at least shows you the courtesy of offering something for your time and trouble. Paid clips are more impressive anyway.
Leads and Resources
First, try your hand at writing for Helium. It's an easy, fun way to collect some clips, and you can even make a little cash while you're at it. Also, sign up for writers' groups or newsletters that provide paying markets.
