Fireworks Safety Tips
Nothing ignites a hot, summer night quite like a brilliant firework display. Indeed, for many families, fireworks are a common way to celebrate during holidays and general festivities. As fun and enticing as fireworks can be, there are some common dangers that can arise when they are not used or handled properly. However, fireworks are generally considered safe when one adheres closely to instructions. Following is a basic guide to setting off fireworks in a safe and responsible manner.
Adhere to Instructions Carefully
For obvious reasons, read the instructions to each firework carefully before attempting to use. These instructions should let you know information such as the distance you should keep from other people during use. Instructions should also alert you as to the handling and disposal of the firework once it is used. If a specific firecracker does not come with an instruction label, it would be safest not to use it at all.
Obey Local Firework Laws
For safety’s sake, do not ignore laws regarding fireworks. These laws were instated for a reason and ignoring them puts everyone’s personal safety in jeopardy. Some areas are simply too urban for fireworks to be considered safe. Furthermore, some areas are too dry. If your region of residence is undergoing a drought, shooting of fireworks could easily ignite a wild fire. If you live in an area where fireworks are banned, this does not necessarily mean that you will be completely unable to view fireworks. A myriad of cities put on a firework show for specific holidays. Your safest bet is to attend one of these.
Stay Sober
Like with many activities, alcohol simply does not mix with fireworks. Unfortunately, since both are commonly present during celebratory events, they are too often combined. Setting off fireworks requires a steady hand and a clear mind. Since alcohol generally dulls the senses, it is never safe for an intoxicated individual to have access to fireworks. If you plan on drinking alcohol, make sure that you designate a sober shooter beforehand.
Keep Fireworks Away from Children
As long as children are kept at a safe distance, their presence is usually regarded as safe during firework shows. However, the act of handling and shooting off fireworks should be reserved for older, more responsible people. No one below the age oftwelveshould be permitted to handle a firework. Furthermore, only shoot off fireworks that were purchased legally. As a general rule, there is usually a solid reason why illegal fireworks were made illegal. When purchasing fireworks, stick to reputable, trusted vendors. Never attempt to purchase "black market" fireworks. Also, never attempt to make your own fireworks at home.
