Finding a Job on Monstercom
Monster.com is the largest and most diverse of the Internet-based employment websites. After you register on the site and enter your resume and work experience, employers regularly scan the site to find a good match for their open positions. If they find you, you would typically receive an e-mail inquiry from the employer or, in some cases, a telephone call.
Registration is free, but you must be sure to have your resume and work experience handy so you can enter it into Monster's system. This process does take awhile; but once you create your account and get your information out there, you're good to go indefinitely. However, if you don't feel like taking the time to create an account, you can simply search for a job on Monster and respond via e-mail, fax, or other means indicated in the job listing.
The Role of Computers in Searching for a JobThese days, the computer is absolutely essential to a person's job search. Whether you use your own computer, or a computer at the public library, or a friend's machine, getting your resume online via Monster.com is an absolute must.
If you don't have an e-mail account, you must first register for one via your Internet service provider or one of the free Internet-based e-mail systems such as Yahoo!, Google Mail, or Hotmail. This will allow you to communicate with potential employers and to receive job notifications via Monster.
In today's example of finding a job using Monster, let's pretend you're looking for a marketing position in the beautiful state of North Carolina.
Searching for Jobs in North Carolina Using Monster.comWhile some may believe Monster is good only for tech jobs, the reality is that it's good for all types of jobs. Follow these steps to search for your new job in North Carolina using Monster.com (we'll use marketing as the job title):
1) Point your Web browser to www.monster.com.
2) In the Keywords field located in the Job Search bar at the top of the page, type marketing. Alternatively, you can click the Occupations drop-down list and select Marketing/Product, then select your field of work (e.g., Brand/Product Marketing).
3) Click the State drop-down list and select NC. Note that we skipped the entry for city; however, if you know the city you'd like to work in, you can enter it and then select the state.
4) Click the Search button to go to the Job Search Results page where you can view all applicable marketing jobs in North Carolina. Note the cities: Charlotte, Raleigh, Cary, etc.
5) Click a job listing to view the details. Note that some listings are employment agencies (e.g., Corestaff, Telesec, Manpower) while others are direct corporate employers. Also note how to apply for the position.
Don't forget about word of mouth; many jobs these days are filled because someone told someone else who told their boss that you're looking for a job. Monster.com is great; but networking is key!
