Finding a Job Interview get Hired

Are you not having success finding a job? If this is true, it is likely that you are making mistakes through your search. You will learn things smart job seekers do.

They never let their guard down, including the times they use their home telephone or cell phone. They have an answering machine message that is professional. They identify themselves and ask the caller to leave their name, phone number and purpose for calling. Also, they talk with plenty of energy and good sense when they get a call from a recruiter who might be trying to schedule an interview with them.

They take the way they prepare their cover letter and resume seriously. They carefully proofread them to catch any spelling errors or crucial omissions. If they know that their materials are not up to par, they buy or check out books that show the right techniques. They also do not list an e-mail address that is not professional. For example, they do not include wacky names such as “wild boy” or “crazy girl” in their address. Instead of printing out their resume and cover letter on regular white paper, they have a copy for each document printed out onto off-white resume paper. Instead of using a regular envelope, they use a resume envelope.

They meticulously prepare for interviews. They go over their resumes and job seeking books while rehearsing answers to the questions they are likely to be asked. They also do not assume that they do not need to learn a few things about the company that is interviewing them, even if it is a retail chain or school district.

They do not allow themselves to remain limited. They do what it takes to get the direct experience employers demand, including taking an internship or doing volunteer work in the field that interests them. If they want to be writers or graphic designers, they practice creating newsletters and fliers. If they want to take an office job or do temp work in an office capacity, they develop their typing, data entry, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel skills.

They do not allow themselves to be late to the interview. Before the day of the interview, they make an advanced trip to the place to make sure that they can find it and to see how long it takes to get there. On the day of the interview, they leave out early enough to try to get there at least ten to fifteen minutes early.

They do not arrive to the interview with a bad appearance or odor. They wear a suit, tie and dress shoes. They come with a briefcase rather than a backpack or gym bag. Their hair is brushed and combed. Their teeth are brushed and flossed. They do not smoke or eat foods that cause bad breath on the way there. They do not walk or ride a bicycle on the way if the weather is hot or rainy.

They arrive with the right attitude. They do not complain, make excuses or bad-mouth their old bosses. They treat the receptionist and security guard with respect.

They do not embarrass themselves in front of the recruiter. They make frequent eye contact and let the recruiter do most of the talking. They answer the questions briefly but thoughtfully. They do not eat, drink, chew gum, discuss their personal lives or talk on their cell phone. They also do not shake hands with the recruiter feebly or lie on the job application they fill out.

They show sincere interest in the position. They ask the recruiter when they can start and what they will do once they are hired. They quickly follow up the interview with a thank-you letter and they call within a week to see where they stand.

You have learned the things smart job seekers do. Do what you have learned to get hired.
