All of us at one point in time are going to look for jobs. Might be a new graduate from a course, a new graduate from high school, graduate from college, a new comer to Canada, someone who moved here from another province or someone who wants to switch jobs. The reasons for looking for jobs are many and differ from person to person.

First step in looking for a job is to make a list of what you like to do and what you are good at. That means writing down your skills, both the ones you were born with (the natural ones) and those you acquired by taking courses or learning them at a work place or even through a Co-op.

It is very important to go for a job in a field that you really like. Working in and with something that you like, gives you a great feeling in the morning when you have to go to work, and also a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Your life will be full and happy.

Once you know what is the best field of work for you, it is time to start looking for that job. There are lots of resources out there. The first one is the daily newspaper – usually the most “wanted” ads are on the Friday and Saturday paper. The second source to look for work is the Internet. Enter “jobs in…” and the name of your city. The search will return few links that is best to click on every one of them and see what they offer. A great source of jobs is also “kijiji”. Every city has a “kijiji” site. Jobs are posted all the time.

Besides the paper and the Internet, there are lots of placement agencies. You have to go in and fill a form, stating your preferences and if you are ready to work as a temporary worker or not. There are also government placement agencies that will help you look for jobs in the field you like.

The next way to look for work is to walk or drive through the city. Lots of times you will see “looking for” or “hiring now” signs in the windows, on signs in the street or on businesses doors. It is a good idea to have a file with copies of your resume with you at all times. Once you see a place you would like to be hired, go in and hand a resume. There are work places that all you have to do is fill a standard resume they will handle to you.

If you like to walk or drive better than sitting or standing in one place, a good job for you is in delivery. Always looking for delivery help are the local papers and fast food places. Large automotive companies are in need of shuttle drivers and of course taxi driver is always an option too.

When you are looking for a job, you have to do it actively. Look around, talk to people, check the papers and the Internet, be on the go all the time. There is a saying stating, “He who looks for it, will find it”.
