Enumerating tips for effective time management could become considerably large therefore, professional development, emotional intelligence, and knowledge management will be the focal point of this discussion.  Time management is necessary for the professionals because of the fiduciary relationship he or she has with their clients.  Therefore, the better a professional can equip himself or herself with skills appropriate to meet the demands of stakeholders in the 21st century the more effective he or she will become with time management.

Enhancing time management skills of professionals requires an understanding of what needs controlling and why it needs controlling by the professional.  Many professionals face the reality of having more things to do in a day then time allows.  Therefore, a gulf exists between what a professional knows needs doing and what he or she actually accomplishes.  This gulf is widening because of the proliferation of information through the spread of technology in our global society that creates an increased demand for customer satisfaction...

Professionals are busier now than ever.  The busy professional must spend time with personal development, planning, developing strategies, organizing, directing, controlling organization processes, maintaining personal and organizational ethics, managing finances, analyzing results, and decision-making.  Due to the rapid rate of change, occurring in the global economy it becomes imperative for professionals to become more efficient in time management.

Therefore, professional development, emotional intelligence, and knowledge management emerges as three tips to increasing effectiveness in time management.  Professional development is the process of lifelong learning.  Through the acquisition of new knowledge, the professional equips himself or herself with the ability to use 21st century technology to solve problems.  Many professionals automatically reflect on past knowledge to find solutions for problems occurring in the 21st century(Wang, 2006).Effective time management, however, requires the professional to integrate explicit and tacit knowledge with new ways of thinking to bring innovative ways of solving 21st century problems(Wang, 2006).

The professional in the 21st century must deal with more diversity then his predecessors.  Therefore, developing emotional intelligence is necessary to deal with the complexities that exist in the emerging global economy. Emotional intelligence is the ability to use the brain effectively to build relationships, motivate behavior, recognize emotions in self, and others, and mange emotions in a manner that facilitates effective time management (Maulding, 2002).

Last, knowledge management is indispensible in developing effective time management skills.   Professionals who need to become better time managers must have the necessary and correct information.  Through the management of the knowledge acquisition, knowledge application, and knowledge renewal professionals are able to improve their ability to process data quicker.  When the necessary information is readily available and the professional is equipped to decipher the data and draw accurate conclusions, effective time management becomes a byproduct.
