Easy Ways to Minimize Fuel Costs
The price of fuel is not to be sniffed at these days. Highly priced petrol and diesel can make traveling by car expensive. Many people only drive when they have to, and others operate a car-pool system, whereby they share car journeys with friends and family in order to minimize fuel costs. However, there are other easy ways people can cut the cost of fuel even further.
Don't idle
Apparently, about ten seconds of idling, that is when a car is stationary with the engine running, uses the same amount of fuel as it does to restart a car. This means that if you're stuck in a heavy traffic jam, or know you're going to be stationary for any length of time beyond ten seconds, you can save money by turning off the engine.
Reduce drag
Reduce drag on your car by making sure you keep its sunroof closed and windows up. In addition, don't attach flags or other similar decorations to the outside of your car. Driving under 35mph probably won't result in much extra fuel usage with windows down, but speeds over this amount make reducing drag worthwhile.
Inflate tires
Drivers can expect to save up to 3% of fuel by simply keeping car tires inflated. This isn't a whopping amount, but each saving adds up.
Replace a dirty air filter
Up to 10% of fuel can be saved by replacing a car's dirty filter. Doing so is cheap, and considering the odds, extremely cost effective.
Accelerate moderately
Moderate, steady acceleration reduces fuel cost, where-as driving incredibly slowly, or pressing down the accelerator with vengeance eats fuel.
Keep to the speed limit
Between 7 and 25% of fuel can be saved by not racing, or rather speeding. Sticking to the speed limit can save you money.
People often recommend coasting, or driving in neutral as a way of cutting fuel costs. However, in many places this is illegal, therefore, if you decide to do so, find out if you're allowed by law first. Not laboring the accelerator though, can save on fuel.
As the cost of living increases, many people are looking for ways to minimize ever-increasing ways their money slips through their fingers. Cars can be expensive to run and maintain. By keeping an eye on fuel usage, and altering driving habits that lead your car to guzzle gas, you can reduce spending.
