Drive Safely in Rain
When ominous clouds begin cloaking the sky, gentle breezes morph into swift gushes, and pellets of water begin shooting from above, it might be time to consider staying at home. Indeed, rainy conditions can quickly turn a normal car-ride into a tumultuous trip. While it is best to stay home during such conditions, sometimes there is no other choice. Additionally, these conditions can be difficult to predict. The weather sometimes makes an ugly turn after setting out for the day. Although driving in the rain can become dangerous, there are ways to make such endeavors safer. Following are some tips fordriving safely in the rain.
Monitor your Speed
Contrary to popular belief, rushing home during a rainstorm is not the best of ideas. Although it is tempting to speed in order to escape the rain, fight this temptation. Instead, try driving the speed-limit or even 5 miles-per-hour below. Since wet conditions increase chances of the road becoming slippery, the last thing you want to do is speed through such a situation. Speeding increases your chances of skidding or even spinning off the road.
Ensure that Windshield Wipers Function Properly
The last thing you want during a road-trip is obstructed vision. Unfortunately, extremely hard rain has the ability to limit visibility through the windshield of the car. To avoid this issue from arising, the best thing you can do is to take precautions to ensure that your windshield wipers work properly. You should have your windshield wipers checked during the yearly inspection of your vehicle. However, if you notice an issue before then, immediately take your car into a mechanic for advice. Like all car parts, windshield wipers can become worn out and fail to work properly. Furthermore, if it is raining extremely heavily and your wipers simply cannot keep up with the amount of precipitation, always pull the car over until the rain eases. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, keep your headlights on during the rain. This not only improves your own visibility, but it helps other drivers to see you as well.
Avoid Driving through Standing Water
Standing water can become quite tumultuous, especially if it is moving. To remain on the side of caution, do not attempt to drive through standing water. Either find an alternate route, or wait out the situation. Under no circumstances should anyone ever attempt to drive through moving water. Water is an unbelievably strong force - your car could be swept away very easily.
