Does a College Degree really have Benefits
So here I am. I graduated from college in May 2007. It is now September 2007. I have applied to over 20 jobs and none of the jobs have fit my college degree qualifications perfectly. I live in small-town-America, where jobs are scarce and high degree holders are rare. With a bachelor's degree in small-town-America, I will be lucky if I end up with a job as a cashier!
I would love to be a cashier. In small-town-America, life couldn't be more simple. Although I have a degree in mathematics, it would not seem reasonable to run the rat race and compete for high end jobs that only leave family and friends in the dust. With my mathematics degree I could be analyzing financial status of gibozo verses glimbozo, or I could be designing a better gliberdo for the gorbuco industry. All that hard work would make the world a better place! right? Well, I would only end up causing Mr. 8th grade educated dude to work 40 plus hour weeks packing, shipping and puting the gliberodo together. So instead of making Mr. 8th grade educated dude suffer under unlivable conditions at gotgo factory, it would be far worth my time meeting Mr. 8th grade educated dude and his buddies hang out at the gumbogo store where I will lavishly use my cashiering skills.
So, does my college degree really pay off? It's hard to say. Some people will tell me that I met so many new and interesting people and had great experiences learning about the world. Others will say I have greater earning potential now. I say, I feel like I'm right back where I started in 8th grade...
