Difference between Market Research Director and Supervisor

From 3arf

Marketing is one of the most important aspects of any business or organization. It involves product development, public relations and advertising as well as customer satisfaction. If marketing is not properly done, the business will not succeed. Market Research is this investigating and developing of market concepts or finding ways if increasing satisfaction with existing products and services. There are two major persons involved in marketing and they can sometimes get confused, this is because they are sometimes the same person! They are the Market Research Director and the Market Research Supervisor.

The Market Research Director is generally over the entire Marketing Research Department. They set the direction that market research will take. Should environmental products be promoted or cost effective be emphasized? How much should safety be a factor? Is the local market enough or should the company go international? The Market Research Director is like and Engineer or Architect, laying out the building and direction the structure of an organization will go. The director gives ideas and the supervisor implements them

If the Market Research Director is the Architect, the Market Research Supervisor is the contractor who builds up the product. They take the plan and directions they are given and supervise how the actual research is done! The Director may decide surveys are needed to determine how a product is viewed, but the Supervisor "supervises" the actual research, making sure the surveys are properly given out and collected, or may even decide when they should be done. He takes the direction and then makes sure everyone follows the path!

Sometimes the Market Research Director and Market Research Supervisor are the same person. This can be a two edged sword, both good and bad. Having one person do both certainly provides continuity, no question about the Supervisor not understanding the direction that the Director wanted the research to take. The downside is that it also decreases the chance for independent evaluation.

Sometimes it is good for one person to take another's idea and see if it is practical. They mat see something that the first person overlooked. This is why scientists working in teams do better and find more solutions than those working along. A Supervisor may see something a Director missed by not knowing exactly what was expected!

That is the reason there is a Market Research Director and a Market Research Supervisor. One provides direction while the other provides supervision. Both provide valuable insights and information that is crucial to any business endeavor.
