Deal with your Difficult Employer

From 3arf

Do you have an employer that makes it difficult to work? Some employers are the greatest people on the planet, but some just don't understand how to treat the people who work for them. Why would an employer want to make it difficult for you to do a good job? That is a question that only the employer can answer, but if you have to deal with an employer like that, there are ways you can get past it.

The first way to deal with your difficult employer is to figure out why they are so difficult. Did you just come from a company that had a different culture? Maybe management was expected to oversee more, but this company expects management to jump in and be just another employee. Perhaps they are a start up company that doesn't have a lot of experience yet, and the business owners are trying their best.

Whatever the reason may be, it doesn't excuse the fact that they might be holding you back. You should try to talk things out with your employer and explain to them how they are making it more difficult to do your job. If the company is a start up, the owner might not realize that he is making things difficult for you. Perhaps a simple chat and laying out a plan for the future will make it easier for both sides to benefit. Not all difficult employers are that way intentionally.

A difficult employer might be difficult simply because they have a higher standard than you are used to. Maybe you used to go to work in a shirt and shorts, but you are expected to dress up in a suit and tie now. Perhaps you are forced to work hours that you are not used to, or don't make sense. The best way to deal with this is to grin and bear it for a little while and see if you can deal with it. If not, you might want to start looking elsewhere.

What if your employer seems to simply be setting you up to fail? This does happen from time to time, and the best way to deal with this is to do the best you can. Show up to work on time and ready to go. If you get fired, you get fired, but you shouldn't dwell on it. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with an unprofessional management structure that is engaging in petty politics.

Some jobs do feel more difficult than they need to be. This could be the result of people who simply don't know how to run a business, or people who don't have experience in a professional setting. Some people are just not very good running a company and simply want to see a profit for no effort. If you run into this, you should run away quickly if at all possible.
