Careful there are Pitfalls in Gift Giving
From 3arf
Gift giving at work can be a slippery slope. Here are a few tips that may help you avoid sliding down the hill and falling into the pit!
- Know your companies policy on gift-giving. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask what the norm and the policy is for your employer. The ranges of customs vary greatly. Some companies encourage drawing names and participating in white elephant gifts. Other companies ask that gift giving not happen in the work place or with vendors. Knowing and keeping these rules are a part of keeping your job.
- Respect dollar limits. Most companies who allow gift exchanges set a limit. This is not a fuzzy line that can be crossed over. If the limit is $20, that's the total, period. Don't try and say you got a fantastic item on sale. You will get caught!
- Choosing appropriate gifts. You want your gifts for work to be professional in nature. Here are some excellent choices.
>Relaxation items like hand grippers or squeeze balls>Picture frames>Pen sets and personal stationary>Motivational books or CDs>Plants>Donations to a favorite charity>Food baskets or gourmet treats>Calendars>Organizers
- Avoid gag gifts. Unless this is a party designed to exchange gag gifts just don't do it. If your company does have a gag gift exchange make your gift completely impersonal. You don't want to run the risk of offending someone who may not have the same sense of humor as you. Generic is your best bet.
- Re-gifting- This doesn't work, especially at work. Even if you save it for years someone will remember. Do not do it.
- Gift Wrapping - This is must. If you can not wrap a gift pay someone to do it for you.
- Personal Friendships - Many of us develop personal friendships at work and want to exchange personal gifts. This is 100% acceptable as long as it has nothing to do with the workplace. You shouldn't bring the gift in the front door. It easy to offend someone if you have forgotten a birthday or special occasion. If you keep it out of work feelings won't get hurt.
- Thank You Cards - Thank you cards are not a thing of the past and they have not been replaced by emails. Any gift deserves a hand written thank you card. Show your co-workers how gracious you can be.
Like anything in the workplace think before you act and you will know what to do about gifts, parties and special occasions. Happy Holidays!
