Careers least likely to have Lay Offs
In this recession, there are many people who are facing layoffs, and other cutbacks. The trick to the current economy is to find a career that has few layoffs, and is in high demand. If your job is valuable, or specialized, you won't face the layoffs that so many other people tend to be facing these days. There are some areas that can't afford to layoff people, or don't need to for the most part to survive. Here are a few career paths that won't force you to be updating your resume too often.
If you are working at a casino, you might not have to fear getting laid off anytime soon. Gambling is actually an industry where people are going to give more money during hard times. People are hard wired to gamble, or try to hit it big when there is a time of economic uncertainty. Since this is the case, working at a casino is actually a pretty safe job, or anywhere else in the gaming industry. Most in Vegas are actually cutting other costs first, and hope for a quick rebound.
Customer service is an area where few people get laid off. To be honest, customer service, or any other retail job is not going to pay well. Labor costs for retail are pretty low, and turnover is actually quite high. If you are paying a work around ten dollars an hour for a regular full time position, would you feel the need to lay people off? With the high rate of turnover, there are always going to be jobs open, so even if you get laid off you won't be out of work for long.
If you work for the government you probably have nothing to fear in terms of layoffs. I worked with a woman who had a job at the county clerks office, and while others were losing jobs, they actually got a three percent raise. Any area of the working sector that is giving raises probably isn't going to be cutting workers anytime soon. That and the fact that contracts have already been negotiated makes it hard for any cuts in the work force to be coming from the government sector.
If you don't want to get laid off, you should just start your own business. If you are the boss, who is going to fire you? I don't think you are going to fire yourself, and as long as the business does OK there is no reason to quit. Trust me, it is still a good time to start a small business, and they are probably what is going to bring the economy back. There is nothing as cool as owning a business, and you never have to worry about getting laid off.
There are still areas of the working sector that aren't going to be cutting people anytime soon. Some industries are just inelastic, as in they are areas that will draw money no matter what. If you happen to get lucky enough to work in these industries, you will always have a job no matter what the economy is doing,
