Education requirements

In order for you to become a qualified electrical engineer you will need to study certain subjects while at high school. These subjects include mathematics, physics and chemistry. To be considered for a degree course in electrical engineering at the university you must at least have two A-levels/three H-grades which include mathematics and one science subject and at least five GCSEs/ S grades or any other equivalent qualification which is recognized by the examination board.

Also available at most universities are access courses for students who don’t have a background in science and math subjects. If you pass the access courses then you automatically qualify for a degree course in the same university.

You should apply for a degree program in electrical engineering which is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). You can also upgrade from a bachelor’s degree to masters degree and a PhD if you feel compelled, to attain a higher qualification than a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Required training

You will need to have hands-on experience if you want to become a certified electrical engineer. You can enroll for an internship in any company which deals in electronics. The hands-on experience will help you when it comes to applying for an advanced degree program or when you apply for a job in this industry.

As an electrical engineer you have a wide variety of employment opportunities available which include:

  • Designing, developing and testing of electronic systems of various devices and equipment
