When you set yourself unrealistic career goals, these goals cannot be measured or are set in a fantasy world which is very unrealistic.

The most common sign that one has set him/herself an unrealistic goal is that he/she becomes demotivated and lacks energy. One will also feel less focused and confidence decreases when one has set an unrealistic career goal.  You have to sit down and re-evaluate your expectations regarding your career because high expectations generally lead to unaccomplished goal setting which in turn will lead to disappointment.

Some people want to climb the career ladder with no proper qualifications or experience. This is an unrealistic expectation as preparation will always meet opportunity. If you are only apply for high level positions but are always unsuccessful then it means that you have not prepared yourself well for the responsibilities that come with a high level position. It is of the utmost importance that you get the qualifications and experience before trying to climb the career ladder too quickly.

Some people set unrealistic goals for themselves as far as experience goes. One cannot apply for a highly skilled job if he/she has only basic experience. Dismissals due to operating defects or  inadequate skills is one sign that your goals are unrealistic. Take time out and try to find  a lower level job where skills can be gained through hard work and commitment and then try to apply for a highly skilled job. One will only lose their self belief and confidence if the expect to be trained in certain areas while applying for highly skilled position.

Another sign that one has unrealistic career expectations is unemployment. You may be sitting at home unable to find a job in the area that you have experience in or that you are qualified in but there are other jobs out there. Some people are too proud and do not want to do a job that is lower than they expect. It is better to be employed in the most menial jobs than unemployed.

These are just some of the signs that one has unrealistic career expectations. A person with unrealistic career expectations will meet disappointments at every turn and be seriously demotivated if he/she does not sit down and re evaluate his/her career goals. Focus and energy is lost and one can lose a lot by not having realistic expectations regarding career.
