Calorie saving tips for Thanksgiving

With the holidays soon approaching, dieting can be challenging not to mention down right antisocial. Here are a few tips to keep the calorie counter pleased to participate in your holiday festivities.

  • Don't skip meals*

While this is a day of big eating, most people skip breakfast  and/or lunch because they think they are going to "make up for it later".  Be sure to eat breakfast and lunch if you are having a Thanksgiving dinner. Not only will eating small frequent meals help to keep your appetite in check throughout the day, it will alleviate the famished feeling when you are at your weakest;surrounded by a feast.

  • Drink plenty of water*

Drinking six to eight glasses of water has it's own health benefit.  The body often mistakes hunger for thirst.  Drink at least an eight ounce glass of water an hour before the meal and another half hour before.

  • Snack wisely*

If you are the host of a gathering, be sure to keep healthy options for your guests.  Vegetable trays with a low fat ranch or yogurt dressing is a crowd pleaser, as are fresh fruit trays.  Nuts, are high calorie however a handful of cashews an hour before a meal will curb your appetite substantially.

  • Belong to the white plate club*

This is about portion consciousness.   The white plate club means when you are loading your plate, be sure you can see white plate between each of your food choices.  If you are one who likes to keep all your food separated you are already a member.

  • Stop eating before you feel full*

It takes the body twenty minutes after being full to have the full feeling, So don't be afraid to put your fork down, and get engaged in the family conversation.  This can help keep your mouth busy with other things.

  • Dessert*

When surround by these sweet guilty pleasures limit yourself three to five bites of dessert. You may spend these bites on any dessert of your choosing.  Whether a bite from five desserts or five of your favorite,  five bites is two more bites than you need to feel satisfied.  Three bites of  a sweet is enough to satisfy a sweet tooth craving, I am allowing you two more bites because its Thanksgiving.  These two extra bites will be about  100-200 more calories.

  • Do not drink alcohol excessively*

What more can be said about this.  Alcohol is high in calories and drinking and driving can ruin anyones holiday.

Whether you are the host or hostess or the dieter take some control of  healthy options that will be satisfying to all.
