Calling of a Teacher

From 3arf

Becoming a teacher is not at the top of the list for kids when you ask them "What would you like to be when you grow up?” Most of us when we are young we want to do something exiting, something daring, and something such as being a: Firefighter, Professional Athlete, Astronaut or maybe even the President.

Teaching is at the bottom of the list, and we all know that at one point or another we've had some teachers that just adds fuel to this idea, these grumpy teachers who they only show up to class because they will receive a paycheck at the end of the month. Luckily for millions of kids around the world not every teacher is like the one's mentioned above. There are those who truly love what they do. Being a teacher could be the most rewarding career one could have. So then why don't we all become teachers, in a way or another we all are, we just don't know it. However in order to be part of that rare breed of teachers you must have "A CALLING TO TEACH". This so call "CALLING" could be many things or just one.

Let’s face it, waking up early to go to school is a pretty tedious task we must perform for a great part of our life, most teenagers hate the fact that every day in school they will be subjected to repetitive talks about topics they're not really into it. Therefore, an important aspect in becoming a great teacher is becoming a pyromaniac (don't take me seriously and begin to burn things up) what I mean by this is that you are the one and only responsible for igniting a spark in each of your students, they will hardly do it alone so you must inspire them through your talks, lesson, experience into loving the subject your teaching. They have the potential to be whatever they desire, but they must start at one point, and that is when a teacher becomes the guiding light for his students. Like Ralph Waldo Emerson said "Every artist was first an amateur."

However this "CALLING" to become a teacher must also is accompanied with love. Love to help others achieve their goals and in order to do so we must ourselves be knowledgeable of how we are going to accomplish that. Preparation is another key to be a great teacher, don't be afraid of researching and constantly finding new ways to do what you already know how to do. Teaching is a never ending art that should always be updated.

Finally the most important quality in order to be an amazing teacher is; every once in a while become a student. Do not seclude yourself into thinking that once you're a teacher your learning process is over, in fact I think a teacher learns more from his students than the students learn from the teacher. Open your eyes and your mind and remember "You learn a lot more as a teacher than as a student".

The calling to be a teacher is a desire, a quality you must always refresh, if you’re in a dead end in your career and are constantly asking yourself why must you keep doing? Remember that even though your job is not always rewarded deep inside you're leaving a mark in each and every single student you teach.
