Cars are one of the most popular methods of transportation and most families like to own one for the benefits and ease they provide in getting around for both work and leisure. Over the years there have been a number of great automobile manufacturers around the world and one of the best in Europe is Volkswagen. They were established in the 1930’s and in their time in business have produced some iconic models. Some of the best of these have included the following
Volkswagen Beetle
This is one of the most distinctive and recognizable cars in the world and it was one of the most iconic car designs of the 20th century. It was originally designed as an economy style vehicle and in its lifetime there were around 21 million of them manufactured. It was first produced in 1938 and continued to come of the production line until 2003, making it one of the longest running models in the world. The design was unlike anything before or since and its rounded profile gave it a distinctive style. While it probably does not rate as one of the most luxurious or sophisticated of vehicles it certainly had many fans and most people that bought a Beetle loved the car. The Herbie movies also helped to bring worldwide fame to the model with the star of the movie being a Volkswagen Beetle car. With such a long life and so many of the vehicles produced it definitely rates as one of Volkswagen top models of all time.
Volkswagen Golf
This vehicle was first introduced in the mid 1970’s and has gone on to become Volkswagen’s best selling model of all time. The car is still in production to this day and the number produced is greater than 27 million. The Golf was designed and marketed as a small family vehicle and the current model is the Mk 6 version. The car is popular with customers and with the experts, with the Mk 3 winning an award at the European Car of the Year awards and every other version of the car being a runner up at the awards. While known as the Golf in most parts of the world it was marketed as the Rabbit in the USA and has been successful in every country that it is sold. The look of the Golf was a big part of its appeal and this was due to the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and the vehicle is considered another of the iconic Volkswagen designs. For the success it has achieved to date it is definitely one of the best Volkswagen models of all time.
Volkswagen Transporter
The Volkswagen Transporter is another of the iconic looking Volkswagen vehicles, although this one is not a car. The Transporter is a series of minivans, minibuses and campervans that were first introduced in the 1950’s, with the T1 and T2 models being the most famous looking of these. These were both campervan type vehicles which were beloved of families and groups of friends as a means of having a touring vacation around Europe. Many of the vehicles were sold and they were a common sight on the highways and byways of Europe during the summer months as plenty of people used them for getting around on their holidays. Later versions of the Transporter series were more standard looking working minivans, although it is the earlier models which had the iconic styling that Volkswagen is famous for.
Volkswagen Passat
The Volkswagen Passat is another of the stylish vehicles that the company introduced in the mid 1970’s. This one was the large family car of their range of vehicles and to date over 15 million vehicles have rolled of the assembly line with six generations of the car having been produced. Although best known as the Passat, it has been marketed under a number of names around the world with some of these including the Dasher, the Quantum and the Santana. However whichever name is used there is no denying it has been one of Volkswagen’s most popular vehicles over the years and it certainly ranks as one of their best models.
