From 3arf

Thanksgiving food drives are held annually by churches, schools, community centers and local food banks/pantries. Hundreds of thousands of people throughout the United States benefit from the generosity of their neighbors through these food drives. Even in tough economic times, many households can spare a donation of two or three cans of food to help another family suffering hard times.

  • Canned Meats

The best choices of canned meats include items like canned chicken, tuna and regional favorites like Spam. Canned chicken is a great Thanksgiving food drive donation as it can be used in many different recipes including a chicken patty appetizer or a side dish of chicken and pasta .

  • Canned Beans or Vegetables

Thanksgiving food drive organizers will appreciate donations of cans of yams, potatoes, green beans, corn, carrots and other vegetables. Avoid items like sauerkraut, beets and lima beans, as these tend to be less popular. Donating green beans? Consider adding the other ingredients for a green bean casserole and include two cans of cream of mushroom soup and a large can of French-fried onions.

  • Rice, Potatoes and Stuffing

Bags or boxes of white, brown or wild rice are a good Thanksgiving food drive donation. Rice can be used as an ingredient is many dishes and works great as a stand-alone food. Boxes of potato flakes are another good choice. If possible, donate the largest size so the family receiving it will be able to have multiple meals from it. Add a couple of cans of gravy to go with the potato flakes. Boxes of stuffing can be found for less than a dollar a box in many stores. Opt for basic flavors like turkey stuffing or simple herb stuffing.

  • Canned Fruit, Jell-O and Pudding

Canned fruit is a welcome addition to a Thanksgiving food drive. Keep the selection healthy and choose varieties canned in natural juices or light syrup. Canned fruit cocktail, peaches, pineapple and pears are all good choices. Boxes of Jell-O and pudding mixes are also good. Gelatins can be served on their own, mixed with fruit or molded. Pudding is a sweet treat that can be made quickly and easily and will be enjoyed by all ages.

Remember when shopping for food items for a Thanksgiving food drive to be mindful of any restrictions or limitations. Most drives will not accept opened food of any sort, homemade food or items packaged in glass containers. Some will accept produce but be sure to check with the food drive coordinator.

Thanksgiving food drives are a great way to help local food banks, which work to feed families year-round. Food banks are often in dire need of what is termed the Super 6. These much needed items include canned meats, canned beans/veggies, canned fruit, peanut butter, boxed meals and canned complete meals.

A Thanksgiving food drive is the perfect time to help local volunteers collect a large amount of non-perishable goods that will be appreciated for the Holiday and beyond.
