Being assertive in the office
When something in the office needs done, the boss will always turn to an assertive employee. An assertive employee gets the job done and accomplishes everything in a timely manner. There are several advantages to being assertive in the office. The assertive employee is normally noticed by managers and, more importantly, the boss. Assertiveness in the office will pay off in the end for many reasons:
Having a reputation for being assertive in the office is a feather in your cap for promotion. There may be other employees eligible for promotion, but your assertiveness will be the characteristic that sets you above the rest. Unfortunately, stagnant and lazy employees get promoted too. Only a good boss will notice your positive attitude and promote you over the office slug any day. Bosses with any sense of vision will want to promote employees that are hungry for success. Hold on and enjoy your upward movement you little go-getter!
Maybe you haven't been with a company long enough to begin thinking about promotion. There are still benefits to being a go-getter. The boss may assign you to specific projects or assignments to make a name for yourself within the company. When the boss sees that you tackled a project with every ounce of energy you have, more projects will be directed your way. The boss will know that you are a person he/she can depend on to get the job done.
Assertive employees require minimal direction from managers. This doesn't mean that your hard work is going unnoticed. This just means that the boss doesn't need to light a fire under your back-side to get things done. Even the boss that loves to micro-manage employees will leave you alone, because they know you show up everyday to perform. Escaping the grips of micro-management will be noticed by employees that are hounded by the boss. Your positive attitude in the office will raise the level of performance up to your standard. After all, the boss leaves you alone and they want to be left alone too.
Success in the workplace is inevitable with an assertive attitude. The boss will notice you for sure and fellow co-workers will enjoy the benefits of working along side of you. Assertiveness can be infectious within an office environment. Imagine an entire office full of assertive employees and you were the one that infected them.
