Behavior that can Result in Job Loss

From 3arf

When working in an organization which expects each and every individual to be part of a team, there are many skills that one needs to develop in order to carry out unhindered daily practices. One wrong move could sabotage the image of an employee and the way he or she is perceived and respected by colleagues and management.

In instances of economic downturn, even the slightest ‘wrongdoing’ could move an employee higher on the list of personel earmarked to be axed. However, many do not recognize certainbehaviorsas ‘dangerous’ or that they could lead to being fired from the organization. This article will shed light on some of these behaviors and ways to avoid such mistakes in the first place.

Being confrontational and rude

During team meetings or discussions, you should be able to ask the right questions and provide your opinion in a polite and a responsible way rather than being confronting or rude. Nasty behavior could make you an outcast even when you possess substantially more skill than the other members of the team and that the opinions you express are useful and make practical sense. Displaying such behavior will not be beneficial to the company and the employer may think of getting rid of such people when the time comes. Developing the ability to communicate what you think without making anyone annoyed or embarrassed can propel you as a great communicator and a person that everyone looks up to when they need advice.

Taking every opportunity to stay away from work

When management sees you as a person that takes leave, especially the sick leave, to stay away from work, it will increase your chances of being kicked out, as sick leave is not meant to be taken regularly. Thus, it is not wise to use up all the sick leave available to you in a calendar year or to use sick leave regularly for purposes other than for actual sickness.

Breaching the team spirit

When you work in a team, it is expected that you will obey the unwritten rules of team work which also deals with communicating sensitive issues related to your team members to a third party. Knowing how to deal with sensitive issues within the team is an important ability that needs to be developed and is expected by most organizations, which rely on closely-knit teams for their success. Undermining the team leaders' ability and the skills of the team members and discussing issues outside of the team without allowing them to be discussed and resolved within the team is one example of ‘breaching the team spirit’. When you become notorious for such acts, it is one sure way to become axed as organizations can do without such people for many different reasons.

Not being truthful and trustworthy

Unless you express your ideas and concerns truthfully and project yourself as a trustworthy person, the management might see you as a threat, especially in instances when there is a financial downturn or increased threat towards leaking company secrets. Thus, being open, truthful and transparent in what you are doing should be the way forward in securing your job during troubled times.

While these are some of the behaviors that you might not think as bad enough to warrant being axed, they may push management when they think in terms of retaining the most trustworthy and the most usable employees during harsh times. However, there can be many othercriteriaused by management in axing an employee, which should also be thought of before acting in modern day work settings.
