Be Comfortable with Acceccories
Riding a motorbike around town is a lot of fun and does not require much thought, but a road trip is very different. You need to make some plans, get some important accessories or the road trip will quickly become a road trip disaster.Accessories are the things that the motorbike didn’t come with when you made the basic purchase. Anything added on to the cost of the basic bike is an accessory. It is an all inclusive and varied list of items.~ Personal itemsThese may not have been necessary around town, but when you are hitting the road it becomes more important to have the right gear. You will need leathers. They are protection in case of a wreck and always worn in wind and weather. The right riding boots are needed for safety as well. Helmets made for long term comfort rather than just functionality are wise. Sunglasses will keep the eyes protected from glare. Quality ear plugs are a good idea even with the best helmets. The helmet should go without saying but, do wear a helmet. It is important to dress in layers and have socks and underwear made from wicking material.Rain gear with an extra layer of mesh can make those rainy days bearable.~Navigational itemsGetting lost is only fun if it lasts a few minutes and there is something cool along the way. A navigation system is a nice addition. If that is out of your price range, a laminated map that can withstand the weather and a proper case will do.~ Tool kitA tool kit can save hours if there is a problem. The basic tool kit needs the following accessories: air pump, tire repair equipment, lockable pliers, a metric hex wrench set, screwdrivers, ratchet wrenches, a multi purpose hand tool and no one should ever go on an adventure without a pocketknife. There may be some electrical needs on the trip as well. So pack some extra fuses, spare bulbs, spark plugs and a mini voltmeter. A flash light, duct tape, electric tape, wire strippers and extra wire should be included as well.~ First aid kitIt probably just as simple and inexpensive to purchase a small first aid kit in a container rather than to try and make one that will fit nicely on the bike.~ CommunicationIf traveling with a group or a passenger it is a good idea to have a radio system. Half the fun is sharing what you are seeing on the road. It is also good to alert each other of possible hazards. While cell phones do not work everywhere, they can be useful. Remember not only to bring a charger, but a full battery ready to insert and use.~ StorageSaddle bags and other storage items need to be in place. Make certain the balance of the bike is correct. This make take some shifting during the road trip. Check it after every stop.~ Emergency food and waterJust in case you are stranded, have enough emergency supplies to keep you going until help arrives.Road trips make for iron butts and many great stories to tell. Take what you need and come home with stories to tell.
