Back up Plan

If you are seeking a job in the music industry then there are a wide variety of positions to consider. If you want to be an artist then you've got a long road ahead of you. The behind the scenes jobs are a little easier to come by.

If you just really enjoy playing your guitar, piano or whatever instrument you are experienced with, then you should consider some other options rather than superstar. Many musicians make a good living as studio musicians. That is, you would do the background music the big name artist or wanna be artist puts onto their recording. You could just apply to different recording studios.

There are many talented people out there and another option you could consider is being the opening act for bigger names. My brother had taken his band on tour for a couple of years to all of the casinos. His band was the opening act for bigger entertainers. The upside was the pay was decent and he got to meet several celebrities.

Some people just want to work with music and have no musical talent whatsoever. There are jobs for people like you. You could apply for a job as a band roadie. You may end up setting up the band equipment for your favorite star. You should have a strong back and be able to lift heavy items.

There are plenty of clerical jobs, writing jobs, and bookkeeping jobs in the music industry too. Whatever your skill, you can find the opportunity to pursue a field in the music industry.

The main thing to keep in mind is to do what work you enjoy. If you enjoy playing music or singing then do it. But you need to know that the money could be lean. You should always have a back up plan to fall back on. If you know you can be happy playing at clubs, cafes, or in a park then you should do that.

If you write your own music then for a small amount of money you can make your own CD and sell it at your own performances. If you build a following then start selling t-shirts and hats. You can slowly add to your products as you build a fan base. When you pick up enough momentum then you will have record labels beating on your door.  Keep in mind, when they come to you then you may not need them.
