Average Speeds Achieved with a 150 Cc Scooter

From 3arf

Average speeds achieved with a 150-cc scooter are usually lower than advertised. Its not that dealers are dishonest but most scooters do not achieve the speeds claimed to be average for them. Most 150-cc scooter engines combined with the weight of their riders do not have enough power to constantly maintain the higher speeds shown on their speedometers. This does not mean they are not reliable or able to perform well in traffic or on the road. While many are capable of reaching their advertised maximum speed maintaining these speeds is a different matter. The weight of the rider and load may vary and road conditions are seldom constant enough to make higher speeds the norm. Most 150cc scooters are relatively quick on the take off. They can accelerate as fast as many regular sized automobiles. The difference comes around forty-five miles per hour when the 150-cc engine is close to its maximum RPM.Forty five to fifty miles per hour is a reasonable benchmark to set for most 150 cc scooters. Riding at higher speeds with the scooter maintaining maximum RPM'S will increase wear on the engine and decrease comfort for the rider.Modern variable transmissions perform very well. This type of transmission will allow the scooter to eventually reach speeds of fifty or fifty-five on many models. A few models will reach even higher speeds. The relatively low overall weight of most 150 cc scooters along with the smaller tire sizes can make them feel unstable at higher speeds. While the scooter may be operating safely within its capabilities, the average rider usually tends to slow to a lower speed. For the thrill seeker traveling sixty miles per hour on a scooter may be more exciting than riding a large motorcycle traveling the same speed. The scooter will definitely get better gas mileage. It is not unusual to get eighty to ninety miles to the gallon of fuel on a 150-cc scooter while averaging forty-five miles per hour.City dwellers and those commuting from the suburbs can travel along at the same speed as the traffic flow on many of the lower speed roadways. The minimum speed is acceptable for most interstate highways but good judgment should be used before attempting to travel along with high-speed traffic.Once the rider has worked out their comfort level and selected routes that conform to their riding habits zipping along at whatever speed will be an enjoyable experience.
