Automotive Maintenance when to Replace Front Brake Pads

From 3arf

Knowing when your vehicle is in need of replacement brake pads is a relatively easy process that can not only achieve continued safe braking capabilities, but avoid costly repairs to other vehicle components if the brake pads were to fail.

The primary function of your vehicles braking system is to produce friction between the brake pads and components known as brake rotors. Rotors are thick metallic discs connected to the vehicles drive axles. When the driver presses the brake pedal the brake pads are forced against the brake rotors surface producing friction. This friction forces the brake rotors to reduce speed and eventually stop.

Over time the high friction demands on the brake pads result in the consumption of the brake pads surface resulting in reduced braking performance and eventual brake failure. In order to make drivers aware that the brake pads are in need of maintenance or replacement most brake pad manufactures have engineered soft metal tabs that produce a high pitched squeal when they make contact with the brake rotor. If brake squeal is heard it is highly recommended that the vehicle's owner either bring the vehicle in for a professional inspection or to visually inspect the vehicles pads themselves. This process is relatively easy for most car owners and is not that dissimilar to replacing a flat tire.

To visually inspect the brake pads follow the same procedure recommended by the vehicle owner's manual in order to remove the vehicles front wheel. With the vehicle safely resting on a jack stand visually inspect both the surface of the brake rotor for score marks or grooves in its surface and the thickness of the brake pad itself. If the brake rotor has grooves in its surface the rotor will have to be replaced or ground by a professional mechanic. If the brake pads are lacking of a sufficient amount of brake material they will need to be replaced.

If you choose to replace the brake pads yourself it is highly recommended you follow all instructions presented in the vehicles repair manual for both proper replacement and safety procedures. These manuals do not always come with the vehicle at time of purchase but can be easily found at a local automotive parts retailer. It is recommended your purchase this book at the same time you purchase replacement brake pads.

Remember to always follow all safety procedures when attempting any automotive repairs. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.
