Automobiles Icons of the Modern Age
When you stop to think about it, the car is really an impressive invention, and is one of the marvels of the modern world. There was once a time where the car almost didn't catch on, and most people couldn't afford one even if they wanted to. The automobile has totally changed the face of what America is, and how we live our lives today. If there were no cars, there would be no easy transportation, and our world would be drastically different.
Think about how much we take our cars for granted. As soon as a kid turns 16 the first thing that they want to do is go get a permit to drive a car, and then get a license to drive that car wherever they please. Getting to work is much easier with a car, and you have more of a social life if you have a car as well. Imagine trying to get to your dinner party, or to the movies without a car. You have to arrange for a ride, and then what happens if that falls through?
The car really represents a marvel in the way that American industry was built. Before the car was built, there was nothing more powerful than a horse to get across the country. Sure, there was a train, and some steam engines, but there was nothing that the average person could really use to get around or go large distances. As wide open as the American continent is, it was hard for the average person to just go where they pleased.
The car changed this, and allowed anyone to really go where they wanted too. Once the mass production of cars was accomplished you could go where you wanted to, and you could go anytime that you wanted. Once the American roads were all connected the car became an even more powerful tool to use. You could go cross-country if you wanted to. And seeing how gas was so cheap, it wasn't that expensive to really go places either.
The car gave us a release from the constraints of long distance travel. The travel time was reduced, and lets face it, the car is a lot more fun mode of transportation than a horse and buggy would be. The car didn't need to be fed, nor did you have to ford it across any rivers. You had bridges, and as the roads got better, and the cars improved, it was really a great way to travel.
The car really is one of the most marvelous inventions of the 20th century. It has opened up the world, and made life, and travel easier for millions of people. As cars continue to get better, and transportation improves, who knows where we can go next. What we do know though is that the car was a revolutionary invention indeed.
