Auto Repairs how to Fix a Hood Hinge
Most drivers have had those moments where taking a car to the mechanic sounds about as fun as getting a cavity filled without Novocaine. And while this is a fairly simple repair, and costs no more than the cost of the parts and properly sized socket wrench, it’s a task best facilitated by to two people. Alignment of the hood once the repair/replacement part has been installed can be a nuisance if trying it all alone.
It is also better to have the job done safely, rather than end up with a costly medical bill. In most cases, replacement will be necessary or most cost effective. Replacement brackets/hinges are available at most auto repair shops, such as Advance Auto Parts, and AutoZone, or any local parts business. Be sure to call and confirm stock, and pick up the part, before starting any removal. Most automobile hoods are mounted and opened in a similar forward manner. While thehingeitself is fairly protected from the elements, frequent use and air exposure will still result in eventual rust and/or wear. Begin by opening the hood. The mounting brackets will be located where the hood attaches indirectly to the car body itself. First off, there are bolts holding the hood in place closest to the windshield’s locale and on the hinges. Remove these bolts and the hood itself, and carefully set this aside. (The extra set of hands is necessary at this point, and should be able to “spot” or support the hood while making removal easier, and decreasing or totally removing the risk of injury).Once the hood has been removed, you now have access to the bracket/hinge that needs replacing or repair. Remove the hinges, loosening the bolts where they attach to the body of the car. You will need to install the new part by tightening the bolts, as per the model specifications (located in your manual), to the body of the car.Re-install the hood to the replaced brackets. Again, an additional person is helpful as they can help hold the hood in place to ensure proper alignment. The hood bolts must also be tightened to the model specifications. When finished, close the hood and confirm that the edges are lined up correctly, adjust if needed/possible. Verify the new hinges work by opening and closing the hood. Apply lubrication (such as Wd40) to the parts if needed.*Always remember: Whenever working on vehicle repairs, be sure to take proper precautions. Safety goggles, gloves and hard shoes may be necessary.*
