Auto Repairs how to Change Air Conditioner Freon
Freon is a pressurized refrigerant that is used in the air conditions of cars and trucks. When you have an air conditioner in a car that is blowing warm air, the refrigerant may be low. If you are concerned about the air conditioner in your car is low on Freon, it will need to be changed. Changing the Freon found in a car's air conditioning requires adding more to the system.
The first step in this process is to identify the type of refrigerant used in your vehicle. If your have a car that was manufactured after 1994, this can be done using R-134 refrigerant. Cars that are manufacturedprior to 1994use a R-12 refrigerant that should be converted to R-134 that is environmentally safe.
The next step in this process is to obtain an air conditioner recharge kit online or from a local auto store in your area. This kit will include a can of refrigerant, a gauge and hoses. Assemble the kit by following the instructions to put all of the pieces together. When this is done, open the hood of your vehicle. Look for the low-pressure and high-pressure ports for your air conditioner. You may need the owner's manual for your vehicle to locate these ports.
The refrigerant that will be added to your car's air conditioner is done using thelow-pressure port. Caps on the ports may be labeled for the low-pressure and high-pressure. Attach the refrigerant hose with the gauge to the low-pressure port. Start the car and turn the AC up all the way. Read the pressure level that is on the gauge. If the pressure is low, your air conditioning system is not getting enough pressure. Turn off the AC or shut-off the vehicle.
Remove the hose from the port and attach the can of refrigerant to the gauge. Turn the handle that is on the gauge to pierce the can. You should hear the pin on the gauge puncture the can. Reattach the hose to the low-pressure port. Restart the vehicle and turn on the AC. Turn the handle on the gauge to begin the process to add Freon to your car's AC. Close the handle when the needle on the gauge indicates that you have added the required amount of Freon.
Remove the hose from the low-pressure port and set the cap back in place. When you have finished this process, you should then begin feeling cold air coming out of the vents in the car.
