Assessing the Future of Minivans

From 3arf

The minivan was and is still a great idea. I think the future of minivans is secure since people may not have a choice. It combines the room and headspace of the SUV and the weight of a large sedan. Compared to it's larger sibling, the van, it is comfortable, more aerodynamic, and has better gas mileage. The price of gas is a critical issue since the price of gas will increase. Competition and a weak dollar are causing havoc with our finances. Don't get stuck with a gaz guzzling SUV. The minivan is a better solution. It starts with each person to make a contribtuion and lifestyle adjustment.

I am a mechanic by trade. I have been under and around many different vehicles. Many of the problems of the minivan have been fixed. Poor weight distribution commonly known as fishtailing has been rectified by a longer nose and the engine moved back toward the center of the car. Most vehicles have dramatically improved in braking, cornering, power, and safety. In my opinion I would by a rear drive vehicle or all-wheel drive for emergency situations and inclement weather.

I recommend a DVD player to mitigate distractions from the kids. Look for electric plug-ins for gaming consoles. The use of a navigation system can increase awareness of streets as a learning tool and be a safety feature. Buying a minivan sets a good example for children. It shows that we respect nature by not being wasteful. A good lesson in all facets of life.

I would like to dispel the myth that SUVs are safer. Driving a vehicle that is heavier than most trucks is not safer by any means. To be comfortable in a vehicle that large it must have a harsh ride to compensate for itself. It will turn slower. You must be aware farther down the road. You will not be able to brake quickly. They have more mass. This means they will crush themselves in a roll-over like a beached whale suffers under it's own weight.

In the future we might be driving fully electric minivans and hybrids. There are vehicles now that have electric motors for each wheel. They will power the car and be used as regenerative brakes. Traction control is built in. The batteries can be arranged toward the center of the vehicle below the floor. Superior handling and weight distibution allows helps the minivan of the future to be safer. I hope you will agree.
