The issue of wearing a motorcycle helmet has been open warfare for some years. Way back in the seventies almost eery out law biker rode his chopper without a helmet on. The vast majority of trail bike riders wore one incase they crashed racing up or down some trail.

This wasn't just fought in the United States. Back then in England and Germany bikers were fighting just as hard.

I think it was in Germany where the bikers could wear just a bandana by just saying it had some religious reasons behind it.

There was one young trail bikerider that was following an older rider in some sand hills. He really lucked out wearing a helmet when he tried to atch up and ended up jumping off a steap sand hill cliff. That's because he wasn't a trained jumper and the weight of the bike landed on him. Instead of pulling back on his ride he hit the ground first on his head and houlder. That broke his collar bone. His riding friend was able to race for a phone and get an ambulance thee before any thing really serious happened to him.

One of the major problems with wearing a helmet is that it cuts off the wearer's sid vision and hearing. Most of the riders that wore helmets way back in the seventies were the ones who rode what was then called a dresser. Them were the big stock rode bikes that were still mostly used by police departments. There were just a few real bikers that had one because new Harlies were mostly too expensive for them to buy.

That blindness and lack of clear hearing is just like what large truck drivers have to deal with just to drive through traffic and stay ccidant free. At least those truckers have worked out their rear view mirrors today that they are really large and adjust electronically. You will hardly ever see an old fashioned chopper with good mirrors on it. Those high lifter handle bars make some thing like that look too bad to get a chopper rider to go for it.

It's just that in the last decade or so enough riders, commonly referred to as Wanna Bes by out laws, to think about personal safety. There are allso some old bikers who are into it too.

That has happened because enough of them can understand how dangerous motor cycles can be. They are determined to make sure no drunk drivers or real old people can cause any accidant to cripple them.

That thought has taken a lot of self concern because one of the point brought up before today was that when the rider's helmet bounced off the pavement it could break his neck and paralize him. There were some riders that happened to. It was because they wore those extra large full cover helmets.

The kind of helmet that has been developed by riders today just cover the top of the rider's head. The helmets are open all the way around so side vision and hearing isn't interfiered with.

That means there are some old timer riders that have finally gotten what they need to survive any time they are forced to lay their bike down. If some votes were taken in any club house of survivers the majority would take a pro helmet side.
