Advice for those over 50 who may Seek new Career
Times today are tough for young people starting their first career, and it could be even tougher for people over 50 who want to get into a second career. If you’ve recently arrived at that half-century year or are now beyond it, there are many factors you should consider about your future. Some advice could help in making that critical decision to change your life's path.1. Consider staying where you are: If you’re earning a decent living, and you’re just a decade or less away from an adequate pension, it may be best to keep on the same course. Unless it becomes absolutely necessary, today’s economic uncertainty is not the time to just pick up and go looking for a new challenge that may not be there for you.2. Look for the storm warnings: The economy may be having a negative effect on your current job stability. If there's downsizing and other types of cutting going on in your company, consider the history of who gets let go first. Often it’s the most senior employees, because they’re earning higher salaries, and can be replaced by younger workers at lower wages. Do some investigating to determine if you're vulnerable. If you see those dark clouds gathering at your company, start preparing to start that second career. Update your resume, make some new connections and do everything else to get ready for a job search. Then, if you lose your job, at least you won’t find yourself suddenly out on the street with no new prospects.3. Test the waters: While considering a new career, do your research as secretly as possible. Don’t talk about your plans among fellow employees, nor use the company computer to contact potential employers. Don’t do anything that could jeopardize your current job.4. Seek help and advice: Discuss your thoughts about a second career with family and friends. You’re sure to get some negative reactions, because the idea may be thought to be foolhardy, especially if you’re currently employed. Listen carefully to members of your immediate family, especially if you’re the prime breadwinner and they depend on your income. Don't jeopardize their future by gambling on yours.5. The idea of new career shouldn't be an unrealistic daydream: When asked, every child will name a dream future, whether it's to be an astronaut, major league baseball player, rock star, famous actor or finding the cure for cancer. We all must compromise along the way and be satisfied with reality. If you honestly want to start a new career after you’ve reached 50, make sure you have all the prospects, qualifications and ability to go into that new adventure.
