Advice for People Starting a second Career over 50
I have a lot of advice for people 50 looking to start a second carreer. I first had to work before I was smart enough to go to College. As a late bloomer I was finally able to assess my needs. When I was young I was without direction or even a plan. Thanks to both work and school and Military experiences I finally grew up and realized some skills and aspirations while discovering what didn't work for me. But, landing an actual full-time job would elude me after I turned 30 years old.
If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't waste my time looking for work. Rather, I would have been far better off by starting my own business as a free-lance typist/writer. There was endless rejection with job searches. I basically wasted all my time and talents and was never discovered. That was before 'time management'. It would have done me a world of good to prioritise and to be efficient.
Eventually, I tried everything and waited for compliments on my workable skills. With some work, some College and some Military I evolved into what I am today. Receiving compliments from teachers, volunteer bosses and Military personnel kept me afloat. Even though my career never took off. While not working at gainful employment, I worked the system instead. It was all my social worker's idea to be put on Social Security Disability because I had previous job experience as a typesetter. It wasn't an income that I was planning for, but, an income nonetheless.
And, it wasn't an easy way out either. I wasted all my time here too applying for and getting approved by both an attorney and a doctor. Again, I would have been better of as a free-lance typist/writer. I eventually waited month if not years to be qualified for aid. If I had the brains to not waste my time at the time my future would have been brighter. There is a lesson to not waste your time and effort! You can't go into a job interview knowing more than the employer. That is the time to know to branch off for yourself. They did! And, that is how business is born. 'Happy enterprising'.
Now, I'm 56 years old and wiser. I have streamlined my skilled activities and time. Always be efficient and make moments count by using priorities. I'm on Disability and donate my work now. As it turns out I halfway have an income and halfway work at my skills. But, if I wasn't persistent and diligent I wouldn't even have that. It is important to keep one's skill levels up any way you can. If I would waste even more time now in my later years I would lose my skills. 'Use it or lose it'. This is advice for people over 50 to start a second career.
