Advantages and Disadvantages to a Cover Letter

From 3arf

A cover letter is basically an introduction letter attached to a job resume. People who are looking for a job usually send cover letters as a  way of introducing themselves to possible employers. Employers often look for cover letters to as a method of screening applicants. A cover letter gives a brief explanation of why you are sending an application, how you learned about the position, and a short description of what is attached (e.g. resume). Cover letters should catch the readers interest, call attention to your background, and show the work attitude you want the reader to know. A cover letter should also persuade the reader into giving you the job, make you look professional, and demonstrate writing and organization skills.

The main advantage of a cover letter is letting the reader or employer know what exactly they are in for. They allow the reader to get a glimpse of the educational and work background of a potential employee. If an application does not have a cover letter, many employers may not give a second thought to it. Another advantage of a cover letter is that it allows you to highlight any unique experience or qualifications you may have that make you better fit for the job. A cover letter is also a good way to give a first impression that may help in the job selection process. One more advantage is that when employers see that you have taken the time to include a well-written letter to save them time, they appreciate you and return the favor. Employers show an interest in you only if you show an interest in them.

The main disadvantage of a cover letter is the writing. If the writing in the cover letter is good, the reader will look at the accompanying documents, such as the resume or the CV. But the disadvantage is that if the cover letter is poorly written, a employer or reader won't even bother looking at the resume or CV. Even if the resume is amazing and has everything that should be in a loyal worker, a poorly written cover letter will result in the over-looking of the whole application.

Therefore, if you write a cover letter, the things included should be concise, highlighting your abilities, and organized. A cover letter that isn't all of that isn't going to get you a job any time soon.
