A new Career how to keep yourself from getting Bored after Retirement
Retirement can be a trying time particularly if the majority of one’s life has been spent working full time when days are structured and weekends a time to relax. During busy work times, when there do not seem to be enough hours in a day, we yearn for a time when we no longer work and can do as we please. Once we reach retirement age we leave work with plans to relax, pursue those hobbies, take leisurely lunches and do what we want to do. Yes initially life is good as we pursue our interests, organise our home and garden and enter into a routine without work.
However as time passes life can become extremely boring for example we get up, feed the animals, and make coffee, breakfast, tidy the bed and anything else that is out of place and then what? Maybe watch TV but this also becomes boring and leaves a sense of laziness and guilt. Strangely the less we do the more tired we feel and anxieties arise wondering if maybe there is something wrong and before long we are going to bed early and not rising until later than usual. After all what is the point of getting up there is nothing to do, so why bother? The reason to bother is that life is for living and even if employment is restricted for the retiree and money is limited, lying in bed can lead to depression and negative thoughts.
Finding paid work as a retiree is not easy particularly in these times of recession. However volunteers are always welcome in charity shops, animal shelters and hospitals. Alternatively if you are good with your hands and can make things such as knitted items, woodwork, sewing or soap then it is worth while building stock and taking a local market stall or if computer literate sell on line on sites such as EBay or Etsy. If there is access to a garden and fruit trees, products can be grown and either sold or made into jams and chutney, to sell at a market. Finally why not use the wisdom that you have gained from life and turn your hand to writing. There are many on line resources that can assist and where on some money can be made.
Retirement years can become a drudge where it feels like days just pass by and nothing changes or is achieved. However it doesn’t have to be this way and although it takes effort to pull oneself out of that dreary routine there are activities available which can stimulate the mind and make one once again feel a valued member of society.
