A Guide to Relationship Gift Giving
Relationships make the holidays that much more meaningful as you have someone to share in the festivities. With that said, many factors must be considered when gift giving. All relationships are not created equal. Read on for some tips to keep in mind when shopping for that special person.
Check your bank account-You don't want to go broke trying to impress your significant other. They will be more impressed and happy if you stay within your means. You don't want to make them feel responsible for your over-spending.
Time Together- How long you have been together has important significance. If this is a new relationship you don't want to go overboard. Try to figure out a nice balance. You don’t want them running for the hills if your present overwhelms them. If you have been together for a long time, try to consider what this person would really enjoy. Have they dropped some hints? Partners are usually impressed by a well thought out gift. It shows you really were listening.
Don’t Overcompensate- If the relationship has been traveling down a rocky road, don’t try to fix things with a huge purchase. Try to buy something meaningful and from the heart. You could write a poem or letter along with your gift. Who doesn’t appreciate a special message from the heart?
For you, or for me- Under no circumstances should you buy your significant other a present that is really meant for, well let’s face it, you. She won’t find it touching to find that new Call of Duty: Black Ops game unless she really wanted it.
Listen- Sometimes the easiest way to figure out what might make a great gift is to listen. Has she/he been complaining about stress? Get them a gift certificate for a massage or day at the spa. Are they short on cash and can’t purchase the little extras? Get them a Tassimo coffee maker or similar. If you open your ears you might find the solution!
With that said, at the end of the day , it’s really up to you to decide what you will purchase. It is really about what’s in your heart and your intent that matters. Stay within your means and enjoy yourself! If you end up choking and getting some ridiculous gift, it shouldn’t matter. You are together because of your feelings and connections, not for what you buy one another. You should enjoy the shopping and don’t look to if with trepidation! Good luck and happy holidays!
