A Checklist for used Car Buyers
It's important to inspect a used car fully before you make a decision to purchase it. Use the following checklist as a guide.
- 1 – Car History
Obtain a car history. It can clue you in on any previous mechanical problems. It can also disclose whether or not the odometer has been rolled back. You'll need to obtain the car's VIN number, typically located on the inside of the passenger door or on the dash to order a report.
- 2 - Exterior
Survey the outside of the car. Look for rust. Check the paint.
- 3 - Suspension
Check the suspension. Push down on the front. If the car bounces too much, you may need new struts or shocks.
- 4 - Windows
Make sure that all the electric windows on the car are operational.
- 5 - Safety Belts
Check to see if the safety belts are working properly.
- 6 - Look into the Glove Box
Make sure the car comes with an operator's manual
Next, check under the hood:
- 7 - Oil and Transmission Fluid
Examine the dipstick and make sure there's enough oil in the car. Make certain the oil is clean. Inspect the transmission fluid. It should be a red or pink color. Make sure it's at the right level.
- 8 - Coolant
Check the amount of coolant in the vehicle.
- 9 - Radiator and Hoses
Make certain the radiator and hoses are in good condition and free of leaks.
Next, start the car, and check the following:
- 10 - Engine
Is it easy to start the car? Do you notice any pings or knocking?
- 11 - Exhaust
While the car is running, make sure that the exhaust is free from smoke.
- 12 - Dashboard
Does the "check engine" light stay on too long? Is the oil pressure gauge reading too low or high?
Now, you're ready to take a test drive. While driving the car, inspect the following:
- 13 - Shifting and Handling
Are there any troubles with shifting? For example, does the car jerk when you put it into reverse? Does the car feel unstable when you're driving it on the highway?
- 14 - Brakes
Check the car's brakes. Do they need replacement? Do they feel spongy when you apply them? Does the brake light come on while you're driving?
Once you've stopped driving the car, check for leaks from underneath the carriage. Complete your inspection by looking at the tires.
- 15 - Tires
Make sure that the tires have an even amount of wear and that they're all the same size. Uneven wear could indicate a problem with the suspension. Check the air pressure. Also, make certain that a spare jack is included in the trunk.
Follow the above tips if you're planning on purchasing a used vehicle. Make sure you know exactly what you're buying.
