ALT-8 Motorcyclists should always Wear Helmets – Agree
Helmets are used by motorcyclists to protect one of their most important body parts, the head, within which resides the most important organ within the human body, the brain. It is with this organ that people should use to see reason as to why motorcyclists should, indeed, always wear helmets when they are riding, even for short periods.
Road accidents are a major contributor to the death rate of any country with a sizable, driving population with private vehicles. Moreover, an overwhelmingly large number of these casualties experienced fatal injuries to the chest, neck and, most importantly, the head. Thus, some countries, such as Singapore, has made it mandatory for all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, particularly because motorcyclists are the most vulnerable to fatal injuries. This is primarily because of the nature of their vehicles and the speed at which they travel.
Let us imagine within our minds, a motorcycle. It does not protect the rider and its passenger from external objects. It does not protect the riders from the surrounding environment. It is agile, fast, yet small compared to other vehicles on the road, such as minivans and trucks. All this factors point towards why helmets shoulds always be worn. It provides a modicum of protection for an integral part of our body, it helps to prevent rain and dust from getting into our eyes. Admittedly, it does not do much to protect bikers from other vehicles yet it can definitely help save your life when an accident does happen. So why are people still debating on this issue?
The answer is nothing more than simple, immature, possessiveness of something many seem to deem as more important than safety: freedom of choice. Many do not want to be deprived of this small degree of control over any aspect of their lives. Yet when asked as to the sensibilities of wearing a helmet, many would admit to it being a very sensible thing to do. They just do not want to feel as if they are being forced into doing it.
Others see it as an unnecessary inconvenience, especially for short rides. Well, if the journey is to be that short, why not walk? It is definitely much safer and healthier. And it certainly solves the problem of people not wanting to put on helmets. Helmets are not needed for walking, to the best of this writer's knowledge. And inconveniences are a part of everyday life, like it or not, but many of these inconveniences serve a specific purpose. Like protecting your life, for instance.
Thus, it is not a matter of a person's prerogative, whether to wear a helmet or not when riding. It is a matter of being sensible and having a sense of priority. Of course, there are instances when helmets are not allowed, such as when crossing borders of a country. But any person with a fully functional brain will recognize the sensibilities of that( so that the customs officer can recognize you, in case you were wondering).
