ALT-8 How Effective is Monstercom in Finding Jobs

From 3arf

I think that Monster.com is not effective when it comes to finding jobs. Monster.com is one of a number of large career websites you can find online. The site lists a large number of jobs, and suggests that if you're unhappy with where you are now, all you need to do is click and discover a whole world of new and exciting positions.

However, there are some interesting statistics which suggest that perhaps Monster.com is not as effective in finding jobs as you might think.

Firstly, Monster.com has only between 3 and 5 percent of all jobs on the internet. That is a tiny proportion of all the jobs out there being advertised in the newspaper, by word of mouth or internally. It's a very small number of jobs to rely upon.

Secondly, Monster.com is a closed system. That is, people pay for the jobs to go up there, and provide only a small number of jobs and a very limited number of companies to choose from. Rather than having a large, open marketplace which is the way most websites, let alone today's markets, are going, they are choosing to have a narrow and closed marketplace.

Does Monster.com earn money by providing a successful job-finding service? Actually, that is not the goal of such a large website. Instead, they are selling positions on their website and also creating a large number of resumes to sell to other head-hunting agencies. Having a quick turnover of job hunters is not useful for them at all.

The reality is that applying for such a small number of jobs is not going to be successful. So many people will apply - around three hundred for each job listed - that the chances your resume will have a fair reading is limited.

In real life, most jobs are not advertised. They are either internal promotions or they are discovered through word of mouth, or other people connections. An effective way of finding a job is to use that people connection by showing up to a company, by being persistent, using friends and family to meet people, and by talking to a wide range of businesses, rather than limiting yourself to a very small and very closed market.

Should you then bother to use Monster.com in order to find a job? In fact, it's a waste of your time and it perpetuates this site and others. Instead, you need to look at more effective ways. These might include search engines which are open to a wide range of businesses, or directly marketing yourself to employers by looking at their companies and what they might be looking for.

In conclusion, Monster.com is not particularly effective in finding jobs. This is because it is not in their interest to do so. As a company which supports a small number of businesses, it is more effective to have a large number of resumes rather than a quick job-finding turnover. It is far more effective to use individual and personal connections in order to find yourself a job.
