ALT-6 What to Include in a Vehicle Winter Emergency Kit

From 3arf

Many people worry about being stranded in a snow storm, or breaking down in the cold of the winter. These things do happen to many people, so here are some ideas to put together an emergency winter kit. This should keep in your car.

A phone is always important, this way you can try and call for help if you need it. If you have an old cell phone that you don’t use anymore, it’s a good idea to put it in your kit, because even if it isn’t activated with an account, it will still call 911 if you have battery life.

You may also want to keep some non-perishable food items like crackers or snack bars, because even if you think that it would never come down to you getting over hungry, you can never be too careful when it comes to being cautious. This will also help you stay nourished, if you get too hungry, especially when it’s cold, it could be crucial to both your health, and your thinking processes.

A scarf, hat, gloves, maybe even a blanket would also be wise. If it gets really cold, no one wants to be stuck in their car freezing. So why not just play it safe and keep some items for warmth in your kit?

First aid items are also very important. Tylenol, band aids, Benadryl, these are all items that may come in handy if you are caught in the cold. If you go to your local pharmacy, they have small first aid kits that you can buy. This way, you can just leave it in your car and not have to worry about forgetting it.

Another idea is to have things to keep you busy. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, puzzles, word finds, all these are great ideas. Especially if there are children in the car, this is a great way to keep them distracted and not thinking about the fact that they are stuck on the side of the road, or stranded somewhere that they are not familiar with.  This is also a marvelous way to keep yourself awake. If there’s one thing that you don’t want to do in the cold, is fall asleep. You never know what could happen.

Some other ideas for a safety kit are flashlights, reading books and radios. When it comes to safety, especially in the cold, one can never be too cautious. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Even if you think that something like being stranded would never happen to you, I’m sure that the other people who have actually been in that situation have probably thought the exact same thing. No-one really thinks that something bad will happen to them, until it really happens. Then it’s all about regretting not having that safety kit together and ready.
