ALT-6 Should Hummers be Outlawed for Road Travel – No

From 3arf

I thought I live in America, the country that so many of my brethren has fought so hard to maintain our freedoms. I can see where our country is heading and I do not like it. When someone is trying to tell me what I can drive or not, where someone can deny me a permit to build the house of my dreams because he or she believes that is too big and I do not need such monstrosity of a house.

I know that our planet has a pollution problem, but the United States has some of the most stringent laws to protect our environment. The global warming phenomenon that everybody is talking about is the next in a long list of possible disasters that is going to doom us all. While I was growing up, we were worried about an ice age that was going to kill all life on Earth. In the sixties, the alarmists were telling all of us that we would destroy the planet with our nuclear capabilities. And now, people are trying to dictate what temperature I need to maintain in my house, if I can grill outside, and even if I can smoke in my own house or car.

If we can afford it, why not drive a hummer? It's big, it waste a lot of gas, so what. If we could drill for oil in Alaska and off the coast of Florida, we would indeed say goodbye to the bloodsucking OPEC and Hugo Chaves. Why have we not built new refineries in the United States? We are working with twenty year old technology. We have not built a nuclear facility in decades, while France gets most of their energy from them. We are the Nation, that for the most part of the twentieth century, lead the world in innovation, fiercenesses, and ingenuity.

Right now, we tremble at the words of the deranged leader of Venezuela, or when OPEC says that prices will go up. They have the power as long as we keep our meek attitude regarding the rest of the Nations. Have we lost our will to fight and do what needs to be done in order to be self-sufficient? What do we produce? We import most of the things that we consume.

The solution of our problems is not to ban hummers, or tell me that I cannot build a big house, that is ridiculous. The solution of our problems is to finally grow our courage and build new refineries, drill for oil in the United States, and build new nuclear plants. How long will we need to wait before our leaders decide that enough is enough? How long before we quit asking dumb questions about banning vehicles and putting restrictions that would not be out of place in the old Soviet Union. How long before we realize that we live in America and not in Cuba?
