ALT-6 How to Green your Gifts

The key point to remember when making your gifts green is determining the definition of a "green gift."

  1. 1. Is it a gift that has been created by hand from recycled goodies that a person may otherwise have considered rubbish(trash).For example a wooden box that could be sanded and hinges replaced and then high glossed or oiled. Is it from a recycle reclamation yard and consist of perhaps a new TV or microwave (not this years model but one that is younger in years than what they may have)

Is it a purchased gift of cosmetic products that supports fair trade industry e.g.They use shea butter from Uganda that is from a source that supports the growth and development of both the local workers and the Butosperum Parkii resource.Native nut to Uganda.Extract it via the traditional method and not the less expensive chemical extraction.
  1. 3. Is it purely a green gift in the sense of color.
  1. 4. Is it simply a purchased product from a company that sells gifts to support it's fund raising campaigns to address environmental issues. e.g Greenpeace, Oxfam.
  1. 5. Is it a gift that comes from a company that is aware of waste by products and addresses these in the best possible way. If there is such a thing. They may use solar electricity, recycled only wrapping, recycled glass or aluminum.A company that is vigilant in maintaining balance with the financial portfolio and invests in other green company's to assist the growth of them as well as enabling them to remain competitive financially.
  1. 6.Is it a green gift that is like many, horticultural e.g a plant.
  1. 7.Is the gift inspirational and encouraging people to think before they act.will it educate them to be more resourceful, not so "disposable."

Really this is just some of the ways to green your gifts.The bottom line is be happy with your choice,do a little research, be creative .Give a gift that is beneficial and not simply locked away.
