ALT-5 How to be a Team Player
Good teamwork is essential to keep a business running and to maximize profits. A good manager understands everyone in a team is important and success is only guaranteed if all team players have the intention to play their role in the team. Qualities, knowledge, experience are important but can only result if you are willing to work as a team player and to respect co-workers.
There are many reasons why teams are created and people have different tasks which contribute to the final result of the work which needs to be done. How to be a good team player depends on several factors and managers can play an important role during times problems arise.Here are some qualities you need to be a good team player:
- Understanding the objectives of your team
It is really important you know and understand the goals of your team. Communication with your team players is important and it is recommended to ask questions if you something don't understand or you don't know exactly which tasks you have to performance. The deadline of your project, your responsibilities, timing of meetings, the budget you have, etc. are factors which you need to understand to execute your tasks as good as possible.
- Good listener
A good team player will listen to the concerns and suggestions of other team players. He/she needs to respect opinions of the other members and tolerate critics. Nobody is perfect and criticism can work positively when presented well. It is best you listen first before you give your own opinion and then look for compromises.
- Communication skills
A good team player communicates about every information which can be important for their work. They share ideas, opinions and thoughts honestly with the other team players. They are open for new ideas and respect their opinions. He/she will always respect the other team players and work constructive together.
- Reliability
Reliability is certainly important in teamwork. The manager of your team needs a team he/she can count on. A good team player will keep promises and follow the instructions of the team leader and manager. He/she needs to be always on time at work and executes his tasks according the guidelines of the team leader or manager. Changing rules without permission is never allowed.
- Flexibility
A team player works with other people who may have different characteristics. It is important you are flexible when you work with other people. It is possible the budget may be decreased, the deadline has changed, some goals has changed, some people left the team or some new initiatives are introduced; you need to be always flexible to adapt on new concepts. It is best you show always your willingness to change things when your team leader or manager changes your tasks in the project. You need to be open for new opportunities and challenges.
- Helping other team players
A good team player need to be always prepared to help other people in his/her team. Problems arise in every team and some people may need help. You need always to offer help when necessary and search for a solution.
- Be happy
A good team player needs to be happy. He/she need to be focused on the positive things which happen during the execution of their work. Forget the negative aspects and rely on the kindness and willingness of your other co-workers to finish the job to a good end.
It is not always easy to be a good team player but if you pay attention to all these qualities, you will succeed to be a good team player. The willingness to help other people and share ideas which are relevant for your work are the keys to achieve success.
